The great outdoors is great in Georgia! Watson Mill Bridge State Park is actually one of the most picturesque state parks in the entire Peach State, with the longest covered bridge in Georgia. Pretty impressive huh!
In fact, the bridge covers 229ft across the South Fork River, and dates back to 1885. Did you know it was built by Washington King, who was the son of a freed slave, as well as famous covered-bridge builder Horace King?
See everything you are learning already - imagine what you could learn when you actually visit! The bridge is supported by a town lattice truss system, which is held together firmly with wooden pins. Any engineering loving kids will love that!
Want to know something else just as fascinating? Well, Georgia actually at one time had over 200 covered bridges, and today there are less than 20, so it really is an important part of Georgia's history!
Of course, we LOVE state parks for the adventure as well as the history, so it's just as well the area is perfect for that afternoon picnic, or overnighting in a quiet campground. Those active families will love the biking, hiking and even horseback riding through thick forest.
During those warmer months, you can even splash around in the cool river shoals just below the bridge.
So are you ready for a GREAT family day out in Georgia's GREAT outdoors! At Watson Mill Bridge State Park, GREAT certainly is the word for it!
