About this activity

Love a bit of history with your nature? Just check out West Virginia's Valley Falls State Park and you can enjoy just that!

You see, back during the 1830s, a trader acquired what is now Valley Falls State Park, and built a lumber mill on the land.  This was followed by a grist mill in 1847 - kids, are you still with us?

THEN, a key section of the the Baltimore & Ohio railroad line was completed in 1853, leading to a boom in the community, with a host of shops, restaurants, schools and factories popping up. Fires and floods ultimately destroyed much of the town, but today, luckily for you, the land was picked up by West Virginia State System, and now YOU can enjoy this land for your next family day out!

With 1,145 acres to explore, you certainly can fill a whole day! Get out and enjoy the sunshine whilst fishing, or kayaking out on the water.

Got those walking shoes? There are 18 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails to explore!

Valley Falls State Park is also stunningly beautiful, with a spectacular series of foaming falls which were created by the dark, rushing waters of the Tygart Valley River.  Don't miss the amazing rock formation either known as Connoquenessing Sandstone, which forms the cap of the falls over which the river plunges and swirls and appears both as ledges and huge room size boulders for over a mile down the narrow canyon floor.

A pretty impressive day out for the family in West Virginia! Are you ready for the adventure?
