About this activity

The World Museum of Mining was founded back in 1963 and really is an amazing place to learn all about the history of mining in Butte, and why the town put minin on the map.

In fact, the World Museum of Mining was founded when the close of Butte's mining heyday was less than 20 years away. In the end, Butte experienced 100 eyars of hardrock mining, earning the reputation of being home to one of the world's most productive copper mines of all time.

The World Museum of Mining exists today to preserve this fascinating, rich and enduring history of Butte and the legacy of its mining and cultural heritage.

The World Museum of Mining is actually one of the few museums in the whole world located on an actual mine yard, the Orphan Girl Mine!

As you explore the museum, you can discover and uncover 50 exhibit buildings, all filled with countless artifacts, as well as 66 primary exhibits within the mine yard.

In fact, families can spend a couple of hours to an entire day lost in the unfolding story!

By walking the streets of Hell Roarin’ Gulch and venturing to the depths of the Orphan Girl Mine, during your family day out in Butte you can almost see their blackened faces and hear their exhausted sighs at the conclusion of the workday. It really shares an insight into what life in the mines was like.

In addition to the museum admission, you can always add a richer and more hands-on experience by joining one of the Underground Mine tours - and they even offer haunted tours too!

A rich family day out surrounded by the rich history of Butte and it's mining past!
