The goal of the Pratt Museum is to strengthen relationships between people and place through stories related to Kachemak Bay, Alaska. The museum's collection houses over 24,000 objects, relating to natural science and culture, earth sciences and biology of the Kachemak bay region.
The Anthropology Collection features over 4,500 objects, excavated from local sites that can allow you to explore the earliest known human inhabitants of the bay area, even as far back as 4500 years BP!
You can see basketry, dolls, fishing implements and clothing from historic Native American cultures, and even see a 1000 year old Kachemak Tradition birch basket!
The Earth Sciences Collection contains over 500 geological and paleontological specimens from Kachemak Bay, including bison and woolly mammoth fossils, and even a rate fossil imprint of a local perch!
The Pratt Museum also features a number of geological samples including volcanic ash, pumice and lava bombs, all representing active regional volcanic activity!
Then of course you have the 6,500 historical images that can actually show you homesteading in early Homer, with over 50 of the oldest known photographs of family life in this are - how amazing!
The Pratt Museum also features rotating exhibits, that will take you on a journey beyond the museum walls, as well as ensuring there is something new for you to discover on your next visit!
