About this activity

The National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial isn't a full family day out in Arlington, Virginia, but it's one that is worth a visit during your time in Arlington.

The National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial is, of course, dedicated to those who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks back in 2001. It's a chance for kids to visit, to understand more about what happened during this infamous event in USA history.  More suitable for the older kids, its a chance for them to think about history in a new way - and that these events they are reading and learning about in school actually have consequences, and affect real people.

So next time they are in history class, they can have a deeper understanding about what the events were that unfolded.

The National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial features 184 Memorial Units, one for each of those who lost their lives. They are located on an age line according to the year that they were born. These are stainless steel strips that cross the Memorial, and begin at zero. You can also look up names and birth year on a locator stone within the Memorial Gateway.

The memorial is actually very beautiful, with a lit pool of flowing water beneath memorial benches. There are also beautiful Crape Myrtles that provide shade for those who visit too.

The National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial is certainly worth a visit for the kids if you are enjoying a history filled visit to the capitol region.
