The House of the Seven Gables happens to let all who visit explore 389 years of Salem's history - so it's a perfect place to start! (The house itself was built in 1668)
The House of the Seven Gables is located on the beautiful Salem harbor, and offers historic house, museum and collection of historic buildings where you can learn all about the incredible and famous past.
Part of a National Historic Landmark District, friendly guides will welcome you as you embark on your history lesson outside of the classroom!
The 2 1/2 acre museum includes incredible preserved 17th and 18th century period homes, as well as three-season Colonial Revival Gardens. When you see the incredible views of Salem Harbor you'll realize it's not a bad spot to be learning!
The House of the Salem Gables is also known as the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, and was built all the way back in 1668. Pretty impressive! Then, you can enjoy a 35 minute tour which will introduce you to two prosperous families, as well as the city's maritime history.
Did you know that Nathaniel Hawthorne has a connection to this home too? Well, this author was actually born only about half a mile from the site in 1804, but then in 1958 his birth house was actually moved to the site of The House of the Seven Gables, and is now a museum - just some of the facts you can learn when you visit! There are impressive galleries of items actually owned by Hawthorne and his family on display in his birth house, and some great examples of mid-18th century rooms.
It really is a history lesson outside of the classroom!
