Stone Mountain is not immediately visible upon entering the park that bears its name, but this magnificent 600-foot granite dome is well worth the wait! This HUGE granite natural phenomenon at Stone Mountain State Park keeps watch on all the families below enjoying a wealth of outdoor activities. In fact, this popular North Carolina park offers nearly every type of outdoor activity you could think of!

For those keen hikers in the family, you'll be excited to know that Stone Mountain State Park offers more than 18 miles of trails where you can really take your time and immerse yourselves in nature.

If you're a keen fishing family, then you get to enjoy more than 20 miles of designated trout waters which spread below the stunning Blue Ridge Parkway.

If you want to extend your family day out for an overnight adventure, or even more, the park have over 90 campsites, with utility hookups, as well as backcountry campsites for those who want to keep it a bit more rustic.

Feeling really adventurous? Check out the rock climbing nearby! Allowed via a permit, you can challenge yourself up the towering 600 ft granite face of the landmark mountain. From there you can see the Hutchinson Homestead, a fascinating restored mid-19th century mountain farm.

It's fun to imagine what life would have been like there all those years ago!

The homestead is complete with a log cabin, barn, blacksmith shop, corncrib, meat house and original furnishings. Visitors can play recordings that explain how different aspects of the farm were run. 

With picnic areas too, Stone Mountain Park offers more than 14,100 acres of mountain beauty ideal for an outdoor adventure you won't ever forget!

Stone Mountain State Park FAQ’s

Why not take a picnic! The picnic area is located near the visitor center and offers a peaceful woodland experience. Included in this area are 75 individual picnic sites and three large picnic shelters. The picnic area offers tables, grills, a water fountain and restrooms.

Whilst the Homestead site is open weekends from May to October, you are welcome to talk through the grounds at other times. You just can't go into the home or exhibits.

Educational materials about Stone Mountain State Park have been developed for grades 5-8 and are correlated with North Carolina's competency-based curriculum in science, social studies, mathematics and English/language arts. The Stone Mountain program introduces students to basic geologic concepts, focusing on Stone Mountain. Major concepts covered include the rock cycle, geologic time, weathering and erosion, igneous rocks, geologic processes, resource use, and stewardship. Accompanying the program is a teacher's booklet and workshop, free of charge to educators.
