About this activity

What's better than reading a history book? LIVING in history! Slater Mill Museum is located on the beautiful Blackstone River in Rhode Island, and it gives families a chance to step back in time right back to the 18th and 19th century during the American Industrial Revolution!

Those little history buffs will love walking around this interactive museum where they can actually take part in the lives of New England visitors - who in fact created the revolution!

There are three wonderfully historic 18th and 19th century buildings where history will be recreated through costumed interpreters. It will actually feel like you're back centuries as they show you what life was like during the time that American began moving from the farm, and into the factories in the 1830s. Pretty amazing stuff!

Can you guess when the Slater Mill was actually built? Here's a hint - between 1792 and 1974. Any guesses? The answer is a very long time ago! The Wilkinson Machine Shop is slightly older being built in 1810, and is a great way for kids to see how products used to be created.

Once you have visited the Sylvanus Brown House, then make sure you stop at the Pawtucket Visitors Center! There's even more for children to do! How fun to walk over a large scale floor map of the entire Blackstone River Valley, before watching a film all about how these exact mills were brought to life in the 19th century.

It's great to watch old footage of an area that you are actually standing in personally! There is the history of the USA's "second" unnamed Revolution, as well as educational on-site tours led by costumed interpreters who can answer all the questions you might have!

History really has come to life at Slater Mill Museum - learning made fun!

Slater Mill Museum FAQ’s

The Slater Mill hosts Community Guild Studios (CGS), a fiber arts center created by Slater Mill for the people of Rhode Island and Southeastern New England. Great for classes!

There isn't any food available at the museum. Why not bring your own! Students are more than welcome to bring a packed lunch.

Dress accordingly—it can be cool in spring and fall, and warm in summer. Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes!

The Slater Mill Museum gift shop is full of fun items including books, photos, mill spun textile souvenirs, glassware and t-shirts as well as fun trinkets & candy for children. The Gallery Shop located across the street also sells an array of items for both children and adults.

There are plenty of amazing programs for the students, so give them a call to discuss what you would like and go from there - they would be happy to have you!

Unfortunately, because the three buildings that make up this historic site are preserved in their historically actuate condition, not all buildings are readily handicap accessible. Call the museum prior to your visit so they can make arrangements for your needs.

If you want to reserve a group tour between Dec and Feb, just give them a call to organize
