About this activity

The Battle of Gettysburg has is one of most iconic battles in US history, and countless stories from the frontline have been heard, through the eyes of soliders, generals and medics. But what about the civilians? And that's where the Shriver House Museum comes in.

At this Gettysburg museum, you can travel back in time and, along with a guide in period attire, you can walk through the Shriver's meticulously restored 1860 home to learn all about this other perspective of the Battle of Gettysburg - the civilians side!

During your time at the museum, you can connect to the past as you listen to the story of George, Hattie, Sadie and Mollie Shriver unfold as you move from room to room, and hear about what life was like before, during and after the Civil War.

Every room is like it's been frozen in time and furnished to how it would have been in 1860. Originally built as their residence and business ("Shriver's Saloon & Ten Pin Alley"!), it found itself being used as a hospital, and there are even an authentic sharpshooters' nest in the attic where two Confederates died.

There is so much history within the Shriver House Museum, you can even still see bullet holes on the south side of the home, and take some time to explore the town garden, which is a great example of a mid-19th century four-square garden.

A fascinating step through the history books in Gettysburg, where you feel like YOU are re-living it first hand!
