The Route of the Hiawatha is the "Crown Jewel" of rail-to-trail mountain bicycle trails in the USA. The 15 mile long Hiawatha Trail utilizes the abandoned Milwaukee railroad grade, near Lookout Pass Ski Area, which has been described as one of the most scenic stretches of railroad in the country.
The Hiawatha includes 10 tunnels and 7 sky high trestles along the crest of the beautiful Bitterroot Mountains. The 1.66 mile long St. Paul Pass tunnel is a highlight of the trail. The best part is.... it's all a gentle downhill ride with shuttle buses at the bottom trailhead ready to take you and your bike back to the top.

The Route of the Hiawatha rail-to-trail project provides a healthy outdoor activity with fun for the whole family. The ride usually takes about 2 1/2 hours to complete with a half hour shuttle ride back to the top starting point.
Lookout Pass has changing tables and plenty of inside and outside seating options where family members can relax and enjoy the scenery.
Lookout Pass Ski Area has a full service Grill & Deli, beverages and snacks, and can also provide picnic lunches to take on the trail.
Helmets and lights are required and are included in our bike rental packages. The 1.66 mile long St Paul Pass tunnel is usually 48 degrees. Bring a light jacket or sweatshirt that you can peel off later.

The Route of the Hiawatha includes 48 historical and interpretive signs that describe the rich history of the Milwaukee Railroad and the many towns and people that lived along the rail grade.

A full service bike rental shop is also located at the ski area featuring TREK mountain bikes and comfort bikes plus canvas trailers and tag-a-longs.
