About this activity

For those families who want to just escape with the urge to travel and explore, head to Raven Rock State Park. The adventure is just an hour's drive from the Research Triangle and only 45 minutes from the Fayetteville area.

The Cape Fear River is popular with many hikers, so grab those hiking boots because we're headed there too! This ageless landmark for river travelers can take you to the stunning Lanier Falls, or the Fish Traps rapids, and of course, the iconic and massive Raven Rock.

During your traverse, hikers will experience mountain laurel, steep terrain, tumbling creeks and rhododendron thickets. You really can immerse yourselves with the wonders of nature!

For those families who want to extend their stay within the park overnight, or even longer, check out the primitive backcountry camping areas perfect for families and paddlers. Make sure you take all your supplies in though, as it's very remote. However, if it's solitude you crave, then this is the place for you.

Any equestrians, there is a separate equestrian area on the river's north bank where you can find extensive trails, as well as a large parking area.

A great place to start is the visitor center and the museum-quality exhibits where kids can learn about the cultural and natural history of the Cape Fear region.

So spend some time at Raven Rock State Park and let nature refresh your spirit and sense of adventure!

Raven Rock State Park FAQ’s

A wide trail leads to the picnic ground from the parking lot on the south side of the river. Towering oak and hickory trees provide shade for 27 tables and eight grills. Drinking water, restrooms and a refreshment stand with a drink machine are located nearby

After periods of heavy rainfall, the trails can become very muddy. To help avoid injury to your horse and damage to park natural resources, it's best to avoid using the trails at these times.

Educational materials about Raven Rock State Park have been developed for grades 5-8 and are correlated to North Carolina's competency-based curriculum in science, social studies, mathematics and English/language arts.
