About this activity

Ready to make your way through the history books on your next family day out in Phoenix?

Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park is the site of a 1,500 year-old Hohokam village ruin located just minutes away from Sky Harbor International Airport, and it's ready and waiting for you to explore it, and learn from it!

Not only is this museum and archaeological park a fun and educational day out for the kids, but it's also a National Historic Landmark!

For those who love getting out in nature, you're in luck because there is a fully accessible 2/3 mile trail that you can explore, taking you through a prehistoric Hohokam archaeological village site. Here, kids can see a partially excavated platform mound and ballcourt ruin, as well as replicated prehistoric houses. Kids, can you imagine living in those kind of houses now?

Moving into the Pueble Grande Museum itself, there are three galleries that you can visit. The main gallery is home to artifacts of the Hohokan, and also gives families a deeper insight into the Pueblo Grande village site.

A popular place for the kids to visit is of course the hands-on children's gallery! This is filled with activities to help kids learn what archaeology is, and how it works!

There is also a changing gallery featuring exhibits on various topics from southwest culture to Arizona history. That also means that that you can go back time after time, and see something new!

In the children’s gallery Dig It!: Explore Archaeology! kids discover a giant photo-mural showing real archaeologists at work. In other hands-on elements, explore how archaeologists study clues from ancient and historic sites. Learn how these clues are used in identifying artifacts, such as ancient pottery, and create your own designs using interactive magnetic drawing slates.

Build your own miniature Hohokam village or take a break and enjoy the museum's orientation video in the newly renovated theater. Both children and adults will find this gallery entertaining, engaging, and educational, and in fact, you'll "DIG IT"!

Throughout the year the museum hosts special events, programs, workshops and lectures which are often great for kids.

A fascinating day out through thousands of years of local history at the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park!
