About this activity

Prickett's Fort is a history lesson in real life! Built in 1774, this small, rustic log fort was used as a refuge from those Native American war parties on the Western frontier of Colonia Virginia. See - you're learning already and you haven't even arrived yet!

Long gone is the original, but the park have re-created the cabin exactly how it would have been, so now you can visit this living history site and really experience 18th century life in person! Throughout the fort, there are costumed interpreters offering demonstrations of true 18th century crafts and trades! You can visit the blacksmiths, or weavers, and even the spinners.

Don't miss the gun shop too which features the ONLY public demonstrations of 18th century firearms in the entire state!

The fort itself is 100x100 ft sq, and features 12ft high log walls and blockhouses. 16 tiny cabins with earthern floors also feature, with a meeting house and storeroom too!

Can you imagine up to 80 families living nearby all rushing to the fort as the uprisings started? Kids - this is a great place to use your imagination and really feel what life would have been like using everything you have learnt!

Don't forget that you are located within the Prickett's Fort State Park too, with picnic tables, fishing, and boating facilities so you can see the park from a different point of view! If you love hiking, then take your shoes are the nature trail has 25 interpretive stations that can teach you all about the flora and fauna that you are experiencing!

Nature, history, and family fun in West Virginia! Let's go!
