About this activity

Old Coal Mine Museum is a fascinating "ghost town" museum in New Mexico, where kids can explore the history of the mine, as well as enjoy interactive fun on some of the exhibits!

Coal mining in the area began about 1835 in "Coal Gulch", which is now known as Madrid. The original tavern was established around 1895, but burnt down in 1944 and re-built, so the history starts before you walk in the door!

Once in the 1950s, Madrid then became known as a ghost town, after the mining community that started in 1890 shut down.

Want to hear something really scary too? The tavern that you can see is said to be one of the most haunted places in the city too! Glasses falling, doors opening, moving furniture...pretty scary huh!?

During your time at the Old Coal Mine Museum, you can actually walk through the Engine House Theatre with an actual train engine looking over the stage! You can even tour the buildings that were the center of the coal mining operations, and kids can actually climb onto Engine 769 and ring the bell!

There are plenty of old mining and company owned relics too.

A fascinating insight into a world gone by, and what better way for kids to learn about history than to actually visit!

Don't forget to say hi to the ghosts...BOO!
