The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is an incredible place to visit with the family in Georgia. With the mysterious swamp, historic sites and fun, family adventures to be had, there are plenty of things to do with the kids here!
There are three main entrances at Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, as well as two secondary entrances, so the best way to plan your trip is to include several of these to ensure you cover all that this amazing swamp has to offer!
Swamps across the USA always evoke fascination in kids. A great way to explore these beautiful areas is to take on wilderness canoeing. These fun paddling trips will be remembered for a lifetime! Watch as the alligators glide through the murky waters, and enjoy herons and egrets wading through the tall grasses. You might even see some bears roaming through the hammocks!
With over 400,000 acres of forests, pine and wet prairies, there are plenty of animals to spot!
If you didn't want to take one the canoeing yourself, there are companies like Okefenokee Adventures which can take you on extended tours, canoeing and kayaking tours, and every overnight adventures!
With a vast network of interconnecting habitats, there are many opportunities for great fishing. (Just be careful around the alligators!)
The Visitor Center at the East Entrance is a great place to enjoy public programs during spring and fall too, and educate kids on the animals in the swamp to make them realize they are not always as dangerous and scary as they might have thought!
