About this activity

Dinosaurs...fossils...digs...we LOVE ourselves a National History Museum, and if you're in Gray, Tennessee, you might want to visit the Natural History Museum and Gray Fossil Site, because there is a lot of history still waiting to be uncovered!

When you visit, you'll travel back in time and experience an ecosystem of an ancient world. From creatures we know today such as the tapir, the rhino and the camel, to creatures weird and wonderful including the saber-toothed car and shovel-tusked elephant! There is so much to uncover.

The museum is filled with interactive exhibits, many of which are permanent, which will really take kids through an incredible journey of evolution.

The Basier Exhibit Hall will actually take you back 5 million years (kids, even parents don't remember 5 million years ago!) where you can peek into the past of East Tennessee.

There is a film that introduces you to the discovery of the Gray Fossil Site, and murals and illustrations, as well as touch screen computer games all assist in teaching kids something pretty amazing.

Smaller children particularly will enjoy the Discovery Carts where they can touch and handle some of the artifacts. Pretty cool!

The Natural History Museum and Gray Fossil Site also have a varying exhibition space with a continuing theme of fun education aimed at children, plus regular seasonal events and activities.

Don't miss the fossil gallery, with some fossils as old as 7 million years old. Pretty incredible! Just imagine the stories that could be told if the fossils could talk!
