The National Museum of the American Indian houses one of the world’s largest and most diverse collections of its kind, and YOU get to enjoy a front row seat! Not only that, this popular Washington DC museum also offers FREE entry, so all families can enjoy this fascinating and educational experience. 

You cultural educational can begin even when looking at the museum’s sweeping curvilinear architecture, its indigenous landscaping, and its exhibitions, because they all designed in collaboration with tribes and communities from across the hemisphere, ensuring all visitors from around the world the sense and spirit of Native America.

The National Museum of the American Indian works in collaboration with the Native peoples of the Western Hemisphere, from the Arctic to Argentina, to protect and foster their cultures by reaffirming traditions and beliefs, encouraging contemporary artistic expression, and empowering the Indian voice.

Some of the exhibitions are ongoing, but many are temporary to ensure you can always go back and see something new! You might one day be exploring the Cherokee culture, and the next you might be learning about historic treaties that were signed.

Then there is the museum collection itself, consisting of around 825,000 items representing over 12,000 years of history and more than 1,200 indigenous cultures throughout the Americas! 

The museum also features an interactive, family-friendly imagiNATIONS Activity Center where visitors can take part in hands-on activities like indigenous inventions and activities, including drumming, basket-weaving, ledger-drawing, skateboarding and storytelling.

The National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, D.C., is located on the National Mall between the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum and the U.S. Capitol Building. The museum does not have parking. Parking is available by meter on the surrounding streets and in local paid parking garages.

National Museum of the American Indian FAQ’s

It's a cafe with a difference! The museum’s Mitsitam Native Foods Cafe enhances the museum experience by providing families the chance to enjoy the indigenous cuisines of the Americas and to explore the history of Native foods. Each of the five food stations depict regional lifeways related to cooking techniques, ingredients, and flavors found in both traditional and contemporary dishes. You might try authentic Native foods such as traditional fry bread and corn totopos as well as contemporary items with a Native American twist—think buffalo burgers!

There is also an espresso coffee bar for hot drinks and pastries in a more casual setting

No food or drink is permitted to be taken into the museum, as well as pets, and yes kids, selfie sticks!

The Roanoke Museum Store presents Native American items from the past and present, illustrating how different artists interpret cultural traditions and art forms. On the museum’s Second Level, the store features jewelry, textiles, and other works by Native artisans; souvenirs; and children’s books and toys.

They love to welcome school groups, as well as scout groups and camps, but make sure you reserve your spot in advance

The museum is accessible to all those with disabilities. If you need assistance just speak to staff when you arrive

Visitors should be prepared for a security check upon entrance to the museum. Please note there may be a line to enter the building on busy days
