About this activity

During your time in the incredibly historic Deadwood, you'll learn about a number of notable figures who ruled the Wild West, and at the Mount Moriah Cemetery you can actually visit their final resting place.

It's also so much more than just a graveyard, and is an incredible insight into a part of the town's Wild West history that will always be remembered as iconic, with a stunning backdrop of the Black Hills.

Mount Moriah Cemetery is located on a plateau overlooking Deadwood Gulch, and was established all the way back in 1878.

Today, western legends, madams, murderers, and pioneers of Deadwood's development call it home

A great place to start your exploration is at the Mount Moriah Cemetery Visitor Center, where you can learn all about the history of the cemetery, check the locations on the gravesites you want to visit, and even explore interpretive panels on cemetery symbolism, death statistics and native & introduced plant species in the region - all during the late 1800s.

Whilst there are many notable names who lie within the cemetery boundaries, including Rev Henry Weston Smith and Seth Bullock (the first sheriff of Deadwood), the most famous surely are "Wild Bill" Hickok (whom we all know from that famous Aces & 8s poker hand), and Calamity Jane, both of whom have been immortalized throughout books, films and legend

Even if you don't plan to seek out any specific gravesites, Mount Moriah Cemetery is historically a fascinating insight into a bygone era, and one that will forever be taught in history classes, and stories remembered
