About this activity

Kids, are you up for something a little different today on your family day out? Yes? Well, why not head to one of the finest anthropology museums in the country? That sounds fun, doesn't it!

The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology is located within the campus of the University of New Mexico, and holds exhibits and programs that can teach you all about cultures from around the world. Of course, we're in the USA, so there is a special emphasis on the cultures of the southwest.

So not only do you get to learn about the world, but also the amazing country you live in too!

Through the exhibits, families can travel all around the world, and learn about the traditional and contemporary people, without even leaving New Mexico. Sounds brilliant!

Exhibits include topics such as Chinese Americans living in New Mexico, since their immigration started in the 1800s. There are exhibits where you can journey through 4 million years of human origins, and even see distant Neanderthal ancestors.

Kids can even check out a reconstructed cave setting, complete with fascinating Ice Age drawings and sculptures!

The Passport to People program offers intergenerational activities at free Family days. Passport activities are fun and informative and relate to a current exhibition at the museum.

Self guided and docent guided tours are available to groups of 10 or more.

So why not take a journey around the world, and learn all about the people! There are traveling exhibits within the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology too, so you can always go back and see something new!

Let's get traveling!
