History is fascinating, and it's even more fascinating when you can see it with your own eyes, walk through it, smell it and touch it.

The Historic Magnolia Mound Plantation is an incredible piece of history in southern Louisiana. This isn't because of its age (Parts of the original house were built in 1791!) or the amazing restorations, but because it has so much history within the area and the community.

This beautiful plantation house was once part of a whopping 900 acre block right on the edge of the might Mississippi River. The main house originally was a small settler's home and eventually was enlarged in the early 1800s.

The Magnolia Mound Plantation has such a rich history that kids can really delve into! They can see how the early settlers from France and West Indies influenced the designs and the architecture.

Of the original 900 acres, the plantation is now housed on 16 of those acres.

There is the museum which is a section of the original 1971 house, but kids can explore so much more! They can check out the open-hearth kitchen which is furnished with vintage utensils. The Overseer's house is original to the plantation and built in 1870 (and the man who lived there was responsible for the success of the plantation! That's a lot of pressure!)

There is a fascinating 1830's quarter house, as well as a crop garden which contains indigo and sugar cane, a carriage house and a pigeonnier. What's that you ask? A house that houses pigeons of course!

A great history lesson for kids whilst in the deep south!
