About this activity

Astoria's Old City Hall building, which is an impressive neoclassical structure designed in 1904, now holds the Heritage Museum, which is filled with permanent and changing exhibit galleries that showcase the rich and exciting history of Clatsop County!

Throughout the exhibits, you will see a number of fascinating historic artifacts that tell the story of the region - including a 1,000 year old hunting implement!

There are also finely crafted 19th century Chinook and Clatsop Indian baskets, as well as a sea otter pelt and beaver hat which really bring to life the early history of Fort Astoria.

Two important industries are showcased too, with both logging and fishing an key mainstay since 1870, and these are represented by tools, equipment and photographs.

Kids can even learn the stories of the many diverse ethnic groups that settled in the region, as they explore the Emigrants Gallery.

Don't miss the latest addition to the Heritage Museum - the "Vice and Virtue in Clatsop County: 1890 to Prohibition" exhibit, containing a partially reconstructed famous Astoria saloon, illustrating both the seedy past and its infamous saloons!

A fascinating exploration into the rich history of Clatsop County!
