About this activity

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is the only one of its kind dedicated to the perils of maritime transport on the Great Lakes - so why not make it a stop on your next family day out?

The museum is also fittingly located at Whitefish Point, Michigan, which is the site of the oldest active lighthouse on Lake Superior!

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum explores the perils of maritime transport on the Great Lakes at the Whitefish Point Light Station, which is actually on the National Register of Historic Places, with Whitefish Point Light Tower actually in continuous operation for 155 years (that makes it the oldest operating lighthouse on Lake Superior!)

At the museum exhibits, you can learn all about Lake Superior and how there is an unrelenting fury that has earned her the reputation of being one of the most dangerous lakes within the Great Lakes region.

You can see artifacts and exhibits that tell stories of the sailors and ships who braved the waters, and those who never made it to their destination.

Take note of the bell of the famous Edmund Fitzgerald that is on display, as a memorial to her lost crew.

After your self-guided tour of the museum, check out the 20 minute video all about the famous Great Lakes Shipwrecks and the actual recovery of the bell!

There are tours of the fully restored 1861 Lightkeepers Quarters, as well as a historic Surfboat House!

After your museum visit, why not climb the Whitefish Point Light Tower, which you can for just a small extra cost! Open seasonally along with the museum, it's a way to connect closer to the history you have just learnt about.

A fascinating insight into the history of the Great Lake shipwrecks!
