The USA has an incredible history, and it's always so much better when kids can actually visit the place that they're learning about! Fort Necessity National Battlefield in Pennsylvania is steeped in history from around the American Revolution, and as children learn all about the battles, they will know it happened right on the ground they are standing!
It was 1754 that the battle began at Fort Necessity (that's a pretty long time ago!). This was the start of the French and Indian war. It ended with the removal of the French, and thus the stage was set for the American Revolution.
The best place to start your visit is the Visitor Center. Here, you will find a ranger on duty who can answer all of your questions! It's here you can watch a 20 minute movie which can give you a quick lesson in the history of the area you are in.
There are talks and tours, as well as historic weapons demonstrations which can be enjoyed during the summer months.
When you have finished there, just follow the short paved path that takes you from the visitors center to the Great Meadow, and Fort Necessity itself - the site where the Indian & French War started.
If you are an active family, why not take the short hike to the Mount Washington Tavern. Spring to Fall, there are tours of the Tavern if they have the staff. It's a pretty cool history too...did you know that it used to be a stage coach stop between 1828 and 1855? Now it's a museum that focuses on life along the National Road. The learning never stops!
Also a spot to see if the monument that marks the final resting place of British General Edward Broddock. There are outdoor exhibits which explain that ill-fated Braddock Campaign of 1755. There is even a trace of the Braddock Road too! History is so amazing!
Last but not least, don't forget Jumonville Glen, which was the site of Washington's first encounter with the French. Yep - George Washington himself! There are outdoor exhibits to help the kids understand what happened.
