Fort D Historic Site takes you back in time to actually re-live and explore history, so here's a bit of a history lesson for you kids to get you started!
Back in the summer of 1861, there were four forts built around Cape Girardeau, on the orders of General Fremont, by soldiers of the 20th Illinois infantry, local militia and engineers of the West.
Of these four forts, only one remains today, and that's Fort D where YOU can visit in person on your next family day out!
Now a city historic site, Fort D Historic Site is great to explore, with self-guided tours, as well as guided tours, as well as experience it as a Civil War living history. Throughout the grounds are also interpretive signs that can tell you even more about this rich history.
It's one thing to read a history book, but it's another to actually learn about history, RIGHT in the very place it happened! Kids can use their imaginations as they uncover the fascinating story, and feel the past unfold around them.
