About this activity

The Days of '76 Museum in Deadwood certainly is a unique museum experience in this amazing town, but very fitting!

The Days of '76 Museum actually began informally as a repository for items of a time gone by - the horse-drawn wagons, the stagecoaches, the clothing, and carriages, as well as archives generated by the celebration.

What celebration you ask?

Well, Days of '76 celebration actually began back in 1924 as a way to honor the town's first pioneers - these being the prospectors looking for their fortunes, the miners who helped them find it, the muleskinners and madams who all poured into the Black Hills in 1876.

Since then, this unique museum has actually grown into a legendary annual event too, complete with a historic parade and award-winning rodeo!

Saddle up kids, you're in for a wild ride!

Inside you can see over 50 historic wagons, carriages and other animal-powered vehicles in the Deadwood: A Story of Movement and Change exhibit.

This 7,000 sq ft exhibit tells the incredible story of how all this early transportation helped settle the American West!

Don't miss the Firearms Exhibit either, where you can learn all about the story of guns in both the Black Hills and throughout American history, with nearly 100 long arms and 200 hand guns in unique displays.

The Days of '76 Museum is a unique museum experience for families in a unique South Dakota town!

You are in the heart of the old West, so why not explore it as much as you can?
