About this activity

Want to explore another fascinating aspect of the USA's wonderful multiculturalism?

Just head to Elk Horn in Iowa, and the Danish Windmill Museum!

The Danish Windmill Museum is for anyone who is interested in Denmark, Danish Customs, Scandinavian traditions and, of course, windmills. Even if you just love learning about American history and the people who shaped it to what it is today, there is something for you at this unique museum and welcome center.

Did you know that Elk Horn's Danish Windmill is the nation's ONLY authentic working Danish Windmill? Yep - which is pretty impressive!

The Mill was originally built in Norre Snede, Denmark all the way back in 1848, and was brought to the United States in 1975, before being rebuilt in Elk Horn by community volunteers in 1976.

Today, the museum and staff are dedicated to preserving and bringing the windmill to life given its status as a valuable historical resource and a tribute to America's rural cultural ethnic heritage.

It's not just the windmill you can see either! While at the mill, visit the new VikingHjem depicting the life of a Viking Smithy in 900 AD (that's a very long time ago!), complete with blacksmith shop and woodworking area for demonstrations and lectures.

We imagine life back in 900 AD was pretty different to what you know today - so use those imaginations kids!

A fun, fascinating and historic day out in Iowa, where another side of American history comes to life - one that you might not have even known existed!
