The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad was originally constructed in 1880 as part of the Rio Grande's San Juan Extension, which served the silver mining district of the San Juan mountains in southwestern Colorado.
A living museum and National Historic Landmark known as America's Highest and Longest Scenic Railroad its no wonder this national treasure was listed in the book '1000 Things To Do Before You Die'.
Getting to Chama. Chama is on US Highway 64/84, 47 miles east of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, 95 miles west of Taos, and 108 miles north of Santa Fe. Getting to Antonito. Antonito is on US Highway 285, 28 miles south of Alamosa, Colorado, and 115 miles north of Santa Fe. The scenic journey unfolds as soon as the train, pulled by its powerful locomotive, leaves the Chama, New Mexico station. In just moments, the gradual climb into the mountains begins. Osier Kitchen plays host to a hot turkey dinner with all the fix'ins. You can also choose from a meatloaf dinner to full soup and salad bar. However, you will want to save room for the homemade desserts made daily in our kitchen.
Be sure to bring sun screen and caps. Also a pair of sun glasses will help protect eyes from flying cinders. Closed toed shoes a must!
