About this activity

Nestled within the stunning mountains of Western Maryland, you'll find Catoctin Mountain Park. In fact, it's one of over 400 national park units in the entire nation! Want to know another fun fact about the park? The Presidential Retreat - Camp David - is located within the park, but you won't find its location on any maps! Shhhh, it's a secret!

The best place to start your incredible outdoor adventure at Catoctin Mountain Park is at the visitor center. It's here that you can get your bearings for your time in the park, explore the bookstore, use the restrooms and check out the exhibits they have there.

The exhibits are a great way for kids to start reading about what they are about to experience, what animals they might see, and also the history of the area too!

Once you are ready to start exploring the park, there are a host of fun activities that you can enjoy together.

Grab those walking shoes because you have 25 miles of hiking trails to explore!  The trails vary in degrees of difficulty, from easy to strenuous, so you can just take it in your own pace.

The roads of Catoctin Mountain Park offer scenic driving all year; but, portions of Park Central Road and Manahan Road are closed in winter.

To add more to your time at the park, you can check out the camping they have available where you can sleep under the stars, or you can be part of history and rent out the historic wooden cabin!

With picnicking, wildlife viewing, fly-fishing, cross country skiing and more, you know that you will be enjoying an adventure at Catoctin Mountain Park!
