About this activity

There is so much history to be explored at the Butterfly Lodge Museum, and your historic adventure starts even when you first arrive! The building itself dates back to 1913, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so you know you're in for a treat!

The storied past of a famous Western writer and his artist son springs to life at Butterfly Lodge Museum. James Williard Schultz was a trapper, trading post operator, explorer, hunting guide and historian of Indian lore.

"Lone Wolf" was the son of James, and became a prolific painter of Indian and Western scenes, and left his distinctive wolf-head signature on some 500 paintings!

When this father and son team got together in 1914, they hunted together, using Butterfly Lodge as a base, when it also became an art studio, and now YOU can visit this very same property, telling their story!

A step back in time, you'll enjoy the original furnishings, artifacts, and a gift and book area that include the creative works of both father and son.

Nestled on a knoll among towering pines near a spring that trickles to the Little Colorado River, even the location is worth visiting alone!

Inspiring and rustic, you'll find beautiful butterflies still fluttering in the meadow!
