About this activity

Interactive displays will take you on a relaxed, meandering journey through the long, colorful and historically important connection Louisiana has with seafood and water transportation industries at the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum.

You can learn all about how fishing, oystering and shrimping in the area, growing to become a center for water-based recreation, as well as how industry and the environment can co-exist.

One of the favorite exhibits with this Waterlife Museum is the Wetlands Wall - a 46ft long curving mural depicting the eco-line (just like a time-line) or the Terrebonne Parish.

The mural takes you on a journey from the deep water and barrier islands of the Gulf of Mexico, through the saltwater marshes, freshwater lakes and estuary system of Louisiana - including the "high country"

Don't miss the life-sized renderings of plants that typically inhabit the incredible landscapes and ecosystems in the region, including swamps, backlands, frontlands, marshes and more - and kids can kind just which bird and animal life live in these eco-zones!

The other permanent exhibits in the museum highlight the natural, social and economic history of Terrebonne Parish, with eye-catching displays and interactive panels that introduce you all to the industries, traditions and personal stories that make up the area's unique culture.

One section of the exhibit features information about fur and alligator harvesting in the area, as well as a large interactive alligator to continue the learning experience!

With all that and so much more at the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum, it's nature, learning, and the great state of Louisiana all coming together to make a fascinating and educational day out in Houma.
