About this activity

Did you know that there were Aztec Ruins in New Mexico? Well, now you do! The Aztec Ruins National Monument is a fascinating experience for the whole family, where you will be surrounded by culture and monuments.

Here's a bit of history for you to start your journey! Did you know that the Pueblo people describe the Aztec Ruins National Monument as part of their migration journey? And now, your family can follow in their ancient passageways back into a time of the past.

There is an 900 year old ancestral Pueblo Great House which has over 400 amazing masonry rooms. If you look up you can see the ORIGINAL timbers holding up the roof - how amazing is that that they are still around!

There are even fingerprints of the workers in the mortar - can you spot them? Use your imagination as to who the fingerprints belong to. What would they have been like? What would their life have been like?

You can even hear an echo of the ritual drums in the Great Kiva. An amazing experience.

It's best to start your journey of the Aztec Ruins National Monument at the Visitor Center, where you can get an orientation to the site, as well as pick up a trail guide. There is also a museum which displays a range of incredible ancient artifacts which were actually excavated at the ruins themselves.

There is also a 15 minute video which is great for kids to get them up to speed on the history.

The Self-guided trail gives you a chanced to check out all the very cool ruins in your own time. Can you believe that what you are experiencing was built centuries ago!?

So back in time with history and let the past live once more!

Aztec Ruins National Monument FAQ’s

The park is all about history, and looking after the ruins so they can stay around for at least another 700 years.

There's a picnic area adjacent to the parking lot so bring your own lunch and enjoy it around history!

Dress for the weather! The summer high temperatures range between 80° and 90° F, with a few days over 100°. That's pretty hot! Afternoon thunderstorms usually cool things down in late July and August.

Bring plenty of water, especially on those hot days

The visitor center, restrooms, picnic tables, and much of the trail are wheelchair accessible. The antechamber looking down into the Great Kiva accommodates most wheelchairs, 29" wide or less. Visitors can also borrow a park wheelchair at the visitor center.

Pets are welcome on leashes in the picnic area.
