About this activity

Have you heard of Stonehenge in the UK? If you're thinking about those mysterious stones that are placed in a circle in a field, then you'd be right!

But, did you know that the USA has it's own stonehenge? Yep! And it's called...America's Stonehenge - how fitting!

America's Stonehenge is just as mysterious as the UK version when it comes to who built it. Perhaps it was built by a Native American culture, or perhaps a migrant population from Europe? What they do have an idea about, is that it's definitely man-made, and it could possibly be the OLDEST man-made structure in the entire USA!

That would make it around 4,000 years old!

They also know that America's Stonehenge was built by ancient people who were well versed in stone construction, as well as astronomy.  They also know that the structure is actually a very accurate astronomical calendar - how amazing is that! In fact, if you tried to read it now, astrologists could determine a specific solar or lunar event.

It's a great place for kids to visit, to really understand about ancient cultures. They also have fun and fascinating events across the year, including gemstone digs for kids, and equinox days.

But did you also know that America's Stonehenge is MORE than just the stones? Yep! Through winter, there are 105 acres of trails where you can enjoy snowshoeing, and the area is home to several friendly alpacas that will come and say hello to you!

History, animals, and snowshoeing - what a great family day out in Salem!
