About this activity

Alaska is such a stunning state, why not see more of it in the comfort of a very iconic train trip! The Alaska Railroad’s main line dates back to 1923, and stretches a whopping 470 miles from Seward to Fairbanks, connecting at various communities along the way.

Not only can you enjoy regular train services through Alaska Railroad, but you can also enjoy day trips from various cities including Anchorage, Fairbanks and Denali. These trips range from an hour to a full day, taking you out to experience amazing wildlife, glaciers, even dog sledding, white water rafting, zliplines and some incorporate cruises and flights too! It's an amazing way to see the state!

The Alaska Railroad operates year round, with scheduled serviced varying seasonally. Naturally, you'll find the busy summer season stretches from mid-May to mid-September, whilst the quieter winter schedule runs the rest of the year from mid-September to mid-May.

So enjoy seeing a side of Alaska you might never have thought you would see - and there is nothing quite like looking out onto snowy mountains from the comfort of a cozy, heated train carriage!

Alaska Railroad Tours FAQ’s

The Alaska Railroad offers dining and bar service for purchase on every passenger train with the exception of the Hurricane Turn Train; the full-service dining room may not be available for Adventure Class passengers on every departure, but all guests are welcome to visit the Wilderness Cafe onboard for tasty grab-and-go items. The menu varies by season.

GoldStar Service is inclusive of meals, soft drinks, and two complimentary adult beverages.

Just like the airlines, the railroad is regulated by the TSA so you are required to check-in at the ticket window and show a government issued photo ID (for those age 18 and older) to receive boarding passes. If you have luggage, it must be checked through to your destination.

They require you to check-in at the ticket counter one hour early at the Anchorage and Fairbanks depots, and 30-45 minutes at Talkeetna, Seward or Denali. At depots, boarding for all trains occurs 20-30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure.

If departing from a location with no ticket window (Portage, Whittier, Girdwood, Wasilla), you are required to be there 15 minutes prior to departure to wait for the train to pull up. At these stations, check-in will be with the conductor on the train.

There are healthy eating options on the train!

They are pleased to provide wheelchair lifts at all stations. Accessibility on other connecting modes of transport can vary, so please check with an agent for details. Alaska Railroad’s passenger trains are wheelchair accessible and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Service animals are welcome aboard.

You can take pets with you however pets are only permitted onboard in the baggage car, and must be in an airline-approved kennel.
