About this activity

Back in 1930, a pioneer businessman named W E Adams founded the Adams Museum, with the sole purpose to preserve and display the incredibly rich and fascinating history of the Black Hills - and luckily for you, you can visit it during your family day out in Deadwood!

There are a host of treasures from the Black Hills history on display, including (get ready kids) - Potato Creek Johnny's gold nugget! You'll have to see it then guess how much it weights - it makes the experience more fun!

Also on display is a pencil sketch of infamous Western legend Wild Bill Hickok by beloved American illustrator N C Wyeth, as well as the mysterious Thoen Stone record of the Ezra Kind party's discovery of gold in the Hills, all the way back in the 1830s!

What would a history museum be without some fossils, and Adams Museum has that too, with a rare one-of-a-kind plesiosaur (that was a marine reptile, kids!)

Don't miss visiting the Legends Galley, offering an up close look at some of the legends of Deadwood, from Calamity Jane, to Seth Bullock and of course, Wild Bill Hickok.

On display are personal belongings, memorabilia, as well as artifacts that show that even legends are human.

Another must see exhibit is Risky Business, telling the story of Deadwood's long history with activities of "questionable repute" as they say, delving into vices such as gambling and crime.

Deadwood is an incredible town, and the history is even more incredible, so make sure you visit Adams Museum on your next family day out in 'dem here Hills!
