About Fort Amherst

Fort Amherst is Britain's biggest and best-preserved Napoleonic fort, and it's free to visit! It's main purpose was the defence of Chatham Dockyard, with nearly two miles of gun positions, barracks, underground works and much more.

It's free to visit, and you'll only be charged for parking and tunnel tours if you wish to go on those. There are over 20 acres of green space which is all linked to the Great Lines Heritage Park and you can explore tunnels, trails, cannons, ditches and much more which overlooks the Chatham's Historic Dockyard.

The tunnel tour is really popular and you'll explore a maze of underground tunnels. They once provided shelter from bombardment, storage and access too and there's lots for you to discover. The tour guide will take you around and give you lots of interesting facts along the way.

Did you know the tunnels are haunted? Why not go on one of their special tours for exploring ghosts and the supernatural!

There's always something going on too! They have lots od children's discovery trails, nature trails, grounds to explore and during the scool holidays they have lots of workshops for the kids to get out in nature. Just check the website to see what's on before you visit!
