About this activity

Who is ready to get inspired!

When you visit the National Gallery of Canada, you know that you are going to be experiencing some pretty incredible works of art. After all, it is the WORLD's largest collection of Canadian art!

Located in one of the most spectacular areas in Ottawa, the National Gallery of Canada is a great way for kids to be introduced to the art world, and realise that art isn't all about paintings. Nope!

They can explore modern art, get inspired by photography, get up close to drawings and sketches, and even learn the stories behind historic sculptures.

Each of the collections cover a different topic, so why not take learning out of the classroom and spend the day with the family learning first hand all about some of the finest art in the country, and the world!

You can explore a collection ALL about Canadian art - some of it dating back hundreds of years! There are indigenous collections, where each piece has a special story and meaning.

If you visit the sculpture collection, then you will be face to face with work that dates back even as early as the 2nd century AD. That's nearly 2000 years old! Kids - can you just imagine the kind of people that created those works? What might they have been like?

There are collections that showcase the Asian culture, photography that will amaze, and contemporary art that will make kids think. It's a great talking point for kids. The younger kids will love the colours and shapes, and the older kids can start looking at the techniques, and what it means to them.

So why not take the family out for an inspiring and educational day out to the National Gallery of Canada. You never know what it might bring out in you!

National Gallery of Canada FAQ’s

There are two cafes where you can pick up some tasty snacks and meals. The cafeteria is more casual for families, with specials and a salad bar. The Cafe l'Entree is great for more formal dining and afternoon teas, pastries and light foods! Best to reserve for that one.

Drawing is permitted in the gallery with pencil only (no eraser). Why not bring something along and try your hand at creating something amazing!

Visit the Bookstore and discover an extensive range of art-related products perfect for the whole family! Items are often inspired by the collections, and there are great gift items, books, ties, posters, stationery, and more!

It's a great way for art students to learn! They offer workshops such as clay workshops, programs and tours perfect for each grade group, and they can even offer programs for you to enjoy in your school too.

There are healthy options in both cafes, with sandwiches, salads, and other light dishes!

The Gallery is entirely wheelchair accessible!

The underground parking is $2.75 for a half hour.
