When gold was first discovered in the Klondike in 1898, the area changed forever. Dawson City became a true frontier town, and now, kids can experience history right in front of their very eyes! Goldbottom Mine Tours are a popular company that offers "self drive" tours, or you can just meet them and they'll take you out to the site, where history will come back to life.
There are a number of activities on site for kids.
From June until the frost (normally mid to late September), they offer two tours daily of the Goldbottom Mine. (They operate in all weather conditions so they rarely close, but even if they do they will still make an effort if you have gone all the way out there. That's how nice the Yukon are!)
Your family will take a trip into the traditional Klondike gold fields - at the former town of Gold Bottom. It used to have up to 5,000 people bustling around the town trying to make their fortune!
The lovely staff offer demonstrations and explanations of the methods and process of mining for gold. You can even learn how to stake a claim and sell the gold! (Good to know just in case you might find some!)
Kids will also be able to get lost in the stories of life on the creeks and what it really took to be a gold miner. It wasn't all glamorous!
Once you have finished with the mine you can really try you luck at panning! Guaranteed panning is often popular for kids, because that means they will be sure to come away with something. If you want something a bit more challenging you can opt for the Creek gold panning! Of course, there are demonstrations throughout the day so if you're not having much luck, you can check you are doing it right with an expert!
Goldbottom Mine Tours are an incredibly insight into a true frontier town, and gives kids a fascinating look at an important part of the gold rush history.
You never know what you might find either!
