Did you know that the West Coast Wilderness Railway was once considered one of the greatest engineering marvels in the entire country? Back then it was called the ABT Railway, and it was the West Coast pioneers who built the original railway all the way back in 1896.

Now, the whole family can explore these amazing journeys on a number of experiences through the sheer sided rainforest gorges, and amazing Tasmanian landscapes! It's also a great way for the kids to learn all about the history of the area, the railroads, the construction, and the people who battled a lot to achieve it!

Way back in 1896, to build a railway such as the West Coast Wilderness Railways, the men had to pick and shovel the side of the gorge for many miles to make room for the tracks. It stretched along the King River, and they had to build a total of 42 bridges! That's pretty amazing!

For that famous "quarter mile" bridge below the gorge, they actually had to drive pylons 60ft into the silt - which meant they were constantly up to their waists in cold water! Pretty brave of them!

The West Coast Wilderness Railway tours offer all visitors a chance to really explore the unique rail heritage that can be found in Tasmania. 

There are a number of experiences that you can choose from. The Rack and Gorge lets you enjoy a half day steam train journey that departs from Queenstown Station, and takes you up the steep grades that the railway is renowned for.

It's amazing to see the King Rover Gorge and the rainforest!

If you want to check out the original harbourside Regatta Point Station, then you can jump on the River and Rainforest experience, that follows the foreshore and allows kids to really get up close to some major engineering feats!
