About this activity

Western Australia has an amazingly fascinating mining past, so why not step back in time and see what hardships were faced by the mining families in the early 1900s, and how this precious metal was found...that's what the Western Australian Museum at Kalgoorlie Boulder is for!

This family friendly museum gives the whole family an insight into the history of the Eastern Goldfields, and the city's amazing mining heritage is all there to learn about!

At the museum you can discover the unique role that the town has played in the development of Western Australia itself - both as a centre of mining, and as it's place on the edge of the Nullabor Plain.

The exhibits at the museum are geared towards those little learners aged 6 and over, there are a plenty of fun features that might appeal to those younger tykes.

The Western Australian Museum at Kalgoorlie Boulder has a number of permanent exhibitions which are great for giving you a fascinating and educational family day out (that's what we like to hear!)

You can explore an authentic miners cottage that lets you really imagine what the living conditions would have been like for the early goldfield settlers. You can stroll the museum grounds, which includes the ethnobotanic garden, as well as a scenic courtyard.

Spend some time in the very unique heritage-listed British Arms Hotel, which is also believed to be the narrowest pub in entire Southern Hemisphere, as well as a recreation of an Edwardian parlour which was out on the goldfields.

Then, in the main gallery you can explore the main influence of the gold rush that transformed the region. There are objects and stories from the Goldfields, from aboriginal history to the early miners.

An great trip back down through a fascinating history of Western Australia!
