If your family is planning a trip to Mount Isa, Outback at Isa is a great place to base yourselves, and begin your educational experience of the area, as well as get all the information you will need for your trip.
There is more than just a visitor centre, although that's certainly a great place to start! You can find out about the Outback North West Region, and what there is to go. There are also staff there to help you with any questions you might have about your upcoming trip.
For the kids, they will love getting "up close" with the award winning Hard Times Mine! First of all, when you meet your tour guide, you will know that this is different. Your tour guide will actually have worked as a miner for most of his life! You can really get to know the ins and outs of what is involved in mining. He can tell you about the cap lamps and the kitted-out overalls. As you descend into the mine in the Alimak Cage, you will start to understand the history of the mining - the good times and of course, the bad.
You can get up close to the machinery and even try the drill - can you feel the earth rumble!? Pretty cool!
For those more into art, Outback at Isa has Mount Isa's only permanent Art Gallery, and if you are feeling more history, you can enjoy the Isa Experience. The whole family can learn about the history of mining, with exhibits and a fascinating theatrette movie! There is also an Outback Park with a central lagoon and a waterfall! A great place to enjoy your family lunch!
So parents, keep Outback at Isa in mind if you are planning a trip to the area, as there is always something to explore!
