About this activity

Turn off those televisions and get the family out into nature...and you don't even have to leave the city!

Kings Park and Botanic Garden is right in the heart of that lovely city of Perth, and lets you surround yourself with an amazing collection of Western Australian flora! You can spend the day enjoying a lovely picnic, going on a walk, exploring with the family, playing (very important), and of course, learning!

There are some amazing panoramic views to enjoy, and along the walkways you can learn all about the rich history of the state while you are there! Make sure you stop and discover Beedawong - which was a special place for the Indigenous people. There is also a pretty special 750 year old boab tree!

The Synergy Parkland is a family-friendly outdoor recreation area, which means it's a great space for children to explore, learn, and play! Amongst the features are a 75m-long elevated walkway, a two-tiered island fort, large-scaled replicas of local dinosaurs (pretty cool!), a timber boardwalk, and an interactive water misting forest. So there are plenty of places for kids to run, play, hide and climb!

On the central lake you’ll find Lycopod Island and its Island Fort. It’s surrounded by a ring of ancient lycopods, replicas of the world's first trees that existed about 1,200 million years ago. How amazing is that!?

If you look carefully, you’ll see a giant dragonfly hiding! The Calamite Forest is a popular recent addition to Lycopod Island. It includes a water misting system that’s activated when children wander through the replica calamites.

Kings Park and Botanic Gardens also offer free guided tours with local volunteers, so it's worth checking out! You can learn how to live off the land on the Boodja Gnarning Walk, and enjoy your own self-guided experience.

Nature in the heart of a beautiful city? Of course there is! Go out and enjoy!
