About this activity

It's time to explore the fascinating natural history and geology of our planet, as well as Virginia, at the Virginia Museum of Natural History! This impressive museum is great fun for the whole family, where you can uncover what lies beneath our feet, meet some prehistoric favorites and learn about what makes our planet super special!

The first exhibit you will see when you arrive at the Virginia Museum of Natural History is the Hall of Ancient Life, displaying fascinating ancient creatures as well as modern science. Kids can see the flying reptile Pteranadon, and marvel over the cast skeleton of a 140 million year old Allosaurus!

Kids can explore the secret world of ants, and their journey as farmers, warriors and buildings, or you can go back in time to the Ice Age and see life-sized skeleton coasts of some of the amazing creatures that lived all those years ago!

Have you ever seen a saber-tooth cat? You can here!

Of course, what would a visit to this Virginia museum be without exploring Virginia itself! Uncovering Virginia explores the state's natural history from 700  million years ago, right through to 300 years ago!

You can learn how nature works, exploring the magnificent forces and processes that shaped the planet to what we know today, and see some dramatic landscape models to aid this.

Don't miss a visit to the Discovery Reef where kids under 8 years can enjoy hands-on interactive play, with a wooden ship as the centerpiece offering some playtime fun!

An exploration into the wonderful world of our planet, and all the natural history that made it what we know and love today!
