About this activity

Imagine being out under the water with your crew, in small bunks for days on end. Being away from home…not knowing when you’ll be back. Living each day in those cramped quarters.

The USS Cod is a real life submarine from WWII, and its the perfect way for kids to really use their imagination and experience what life on a submarine would have been like - good and bad!  The submarine is now a national landmark and right in Cleveland for kids to explore and learn about!

The season runs from May to September, and is a fascinating look at what life on the submarine would have been life. Kids can also learn WWII history, including the battles that took place.

An invaluable history lesson!

The submarine began it's life in 1942, and was launched in 1943. In total, she fought in seven battles - the last being all the way in the South China Sea!

It might not be an easy visit though. The USS Cod hasn't been altered from her original configuration, which means all the original hatchways have to be used. Pretty awesome for kids to experience first hand what it would be like! But smaller kids and those with less mobility will have to be a bit more careful.

Get those history hats on, and enjoy your visit to this incredible piece of American history!
