Where are we going today?

The public are welcome to visit the dual sites of the Mount Washington Observatory at North Conwy Village where there’s also a weather discovery centre, or by snowcat to the summit site where there’s a museum on the peak’s unique alpine ecology.

Tours are available of the working weather station where kids can meet the scientists, explore the equipment and learn about working 6,288 feet up.

Its mission is to advance understanding of the natural systems that create the Earth's weather and climate, by maintaining its mountaintop weather station, conducting research and educational programs and interpreting the heritage of the Mount Washington region.

We visited Mount Washington on July 25, 2014 as part of our upper east coast trip. I wanted to visit it after I read about it in National Geographic, especially about the wind speed and temperature drop on the summit. We went up via the toll auto road. The drive up and down is not really scary as long as you are careful. As a matter of fact, I felt it is too short a drive. The views along the drive are great, but less grand than those in wild west. It costs $10 to walk around a room as big as my kitchen. After hiking up 6 miles to the summit, this was very disappointing.

The most impressive part is really the top about the fierce wind force, the fast-moving cloud, the chilly temperature, the story behind people working there or hiking there and the historical tragedies as a result of the bad weather. I think it is one of a kind experience. The only con is I wish the auto tool is by car without charging additional each passenger on the car.
