About this activity

The Detroit Zoo has 125 acres of naturalistic habitats for more than 2,000 animals, from ALL across the globe. So you don't have to venture to the plains of Africa, or the jungles of South America to see your favorites face to face.

You just have to be in Detroit!

A visit to the African Rainforest is home to several species of must-see African natives, including the residents of the Great Apes of Harambee – chimpanzees, gorillas and a drill – and birds such as cranes, flamingos, spoonbills and vultures.

The African Grasslands is where kids can learn about the diverse species of the vast African Savannah, including Warthogs, giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, white rhinoceroses, lions, African birds and aardvarks.

The American Grasslands show that you don't have to travel far to see some beautiful creatures, including the famous Grizzly bear, bison, beaver, wolf, wolverine and of course that iconic Bald Eagle .

Kids can travel to the Asian jungle and spend time with Japanese macaques and those adorable sloths, or they can visit the ends of the earth at one of North America's largest polar bear habitats - the Arctic Ring of Life.

Don't miss a chance to head back Down Under either, with wallabies and kangaroos. Here, kids can get face-to-face with the marsupials from right inside this immersive habitat, traveling along a winding path while the animals are free to bound and graze wherever they please.

Butterflies, reptiles, aviaries, and the largest and most extraordinary center for penguins in the entire world, The Detroit Zoo knows how to give you a WILD time in Michigan - so let's get started!
