Pana`ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens is located off Hwy. 11 in Hilo on the island of Hawaii It is the only natural tropical rainforest zoo in the United States.

    Visited the zoo this morning with my 3 yo daughter; she had a fun time. Very impressive for not charging admission. We plan to visit this weekend for the petting zoo.

    Free and perfect for the two hours we had to kill. The bird exhibits were our favorites. So many macaws!

    I really wasn't expecting much from a free zoo, and we only stopped by on the way to somewhere else when we needed something to do for a few hours. But this place had a good selection of interesting animals. Not a lot of the large animals with huge enclosures, except for the white tiger.

    Panaewa Zoo is wonderful..keikis love to visit Namaste.. their white tiger. Evryone who works there is full of Aloha and willing to help or answer questions. Not as big a Honolulu Zoo. But, well worth the drive! Its country...BEAUTIFUL!!!:)

I really wasn't expecting much from a free zoo, and we only stopped by on the way to somewhere else when we needed something to do for a few hours. But this place had a good selection of interesting animals. Not a lot of the large animals with huge enclosures, except for the white tiger.

The best part about this zoo was that they didn't bother with barriers set away from the cages (except for the white tiger), and if an animal might bite, they simply put a big sign up that said "animal bites" with a picture of a bunch of teeth. This meant that for nearly all the animals you could walk right up to the cage and peer between the wires to get a really good look at the animal. Also convenient for taking pictures, since you could aim the lens between the wires.

They have a white crested cockatoo named Einstein who is a bit of a show off. We saw him getting fed, and he would walk over to his dish of peanuts, grab one, then walk back to stand in front of whoever was watching him, then sit there and shell the peanut, then remove the skin, then eat it. And then he'd repeat the process.
