Directions

All tours begin at the park headquarters. The headquarters is located on the south side of Exit 131 off Interstate 90 in western South Dakota, beside the Conoco gas station. This is 75 miles east of Rapid City. Launch Control Facility Delta-01 is 4 mile west of headquarters. Launch Facility Delta-09 (missile silo) is located south of Interstate 90 just off exit 116. It is approximately 15 miles west of park headquarters.

Where are we going today?

Here you will find remnants of the Cold War, including an underground launch control center and a missile silo. Minuteman missiles held the power to destroy civilization. Yet the same destructive force acted as a deterrent which kept the peace for three decades. At Minuteman Missile it is possible to revisit the Cold War and learn how nuclear war came to haunt the world.

We really enjoyed this tour. While small, the visitor center was fantastic. It is right off of the main entrance to the Badlands. Stop in and gas up next door at the Conoco.

You will find some really great historical items in the visitor center. We spent extra time to take the paid guided tour of the control center. It was awesome!

Allow extra time to do the paid tour as they are by appt only. This tour / site is more informative and interesting than the one at Ellsworth.

When the staff weren't looking, I pressed the big red button on the main control board labeled "launch". Nothing happened. What a rip-off!!!

Okay, so you can easily mess this up if you don't pay attention. The first stop you should make is the minuteman missile national historic site visitor center. Here you can get tickets to visit Delta-01 tours. The tickets are free and you cannot reserve them - it is a first come first serve basis so get there early. Next, if you visit Delta-09, you cannot go inside it, rather you can take a telephone tour but there really isn't much to see at Delta-09 and you can get the information for the telephone tour at the visitor center.

Ok, so if you approach from the wrong direction and get off at the first sign for the site you may end up at the old silo which you need to have passes to get the tour... Needless to say they don't have large signs up saying that and we stood outside the gate waiting to get in and when the Ranger approached and asked for our tickets we were like huh? then she got rude and said you need passes and will have to head to the main office. Down the interstate we went where we found a trailer and a small display. Lame... come on park service get your stuff...Read More

Lesser known, but very cool historic site.
Step 1: Go to the visitors center at the East entrance of the Badlands National Park.
Step 2: Get your reservation for the underground bunker tour, then go there.
Step 3: Drive and go see the silo with the glass top.
Step 4: Drive around the Black Hills and find old silos in fields.

Super neat way to take a driving tour of the Black Hills!
