Where are we going today?

Lake Mead National Recreation Area offers a wealth of things to do and places to go year-round. Its huge lakes cater to boaters, swimmers, sunbathers, and fishermen while its desert rewards hikers, wildlife photographers, and roadside sightseers. It is also home to thousands of desert plants and animals, adapted to survive in an extreme place where rain is scarce and temperatures soar.

    Great, but.....

Don't try to go swimming at the beach areas. Full of jiggity jaggity rocks to step on. It smells like septic on the shore. Baby diapers, dead fish, weird floaty things in the water. .... rent a boat and swim in the middle of the lake. Don't get me wrong, it's great there, but the lakeshore reminds me of a dirty pond in a3rd world country with flies and awesome things to cut your feet on and get a parasite.

A nice quick stop with a very minor detour when you are visiting the Hoover dam. Great set of exhibits and cheerful Rangers who like to help you plan a hike. The hike will take you to the Hoover dam. Hike/ don't hike (its AZ hot in summer), does not matter. Take 15-30 minutes to cool off, see the visitor center and take a few pictures of Lake Mead.

Nice place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Sin City. Relax here after seeing the Hoover Dam.
