Are you ready for a day of history AND nature? Head on over to Historic Yates Mill County Park in Raleigh, and you will get just that!

This Wake County mill has been standing in the same spot since the 1750s - now that is a long time! In fact, it's the last operable water-powered gristmill in the entire county. Did you know that more than 70 used to once exist? See - you're learning already!

Your visit at this historic attraction offers unique environmental and historical experiences, all located in 174 acres of wildlife refuge! From March to November, this historic mill is open for guided tours, as well as costumed corn grinding demonstrations, so you can really get a feel of what life and work would have been like all those years ago!

The equipment in the mill is original, so it really is history coming to life.

Historic Yates Mill County Park also offers great programs across the year for all ages. They have activities where kids can learn all about animals, and programs where you can learn about stone masons and dam builders - important trades of the past! Kids can even channel their archaeologists and try and excavate hidden artifacts right under their feet!

Kids can make and fly kites, or even learn about the habitats around the pond. Historic Yates Mill County Park really is a family experience in nature AND history - so let's get learning and exploring!

Historic Yates Mill County Park FAQ’s

Make sure you check the events that are happening ahead of time so you can put them in your diary!

They offer a wide variety of programs designed to enrich children's learning and classroom experiences. All of their educational programs are designed to be compatible with the current North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Trained docents and education staff lead groups through the historic site. A great way for kids to learn about history!

You can enjoy your own picnic in the designated areas, on a first come basis

The guided tours are 30 minutes at 1pm, 1:30pm, 2pm, 2:30pm, and 3pm daily. Grab the tickets from the visitor center. They also offer local history tours. Check the different times for the corn grinding demos.
