The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum and their functioning Calera and Shelby Railroad are an up-and-coming tourist railroad operation and museum which are more interactive, entertaining, and educational than most. The museum yards are open so you may walk amongst the railroad history. The restored depot is a comprehensive display of treasured railroad artifacts and historical information, several non-active rail cars are frequently opened for guests to look about, and there is even an interactive display of old railroad signals. The train rides are short but packed with North Alabama scenery including a winery where you may get off the train and take a tour or a tasting! Multiple trains a day allow for flexible schedules if you wish to stay at the winery or even ride over and over again. This railroad deserves our support so they can restore more of their route and further develop their programs. It is obvious that they have excellent ideas, and I can't wait to see what they have to offer next!
